Discord has its own built-in text formatting system based on Markdown. Inside any message, you can wrap words in special characters to change how they render. This native formatting is processed server-side, which means it is reliable, accessible to screen readers, and does not break search or bot commands. Here is a quick reference for every Markdown style Discord supports:
| Style | Syntax | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Bold | **bold** | bold |
| Italic | *italic* | italic |
| Underline | __underline__ | underline |
| Strikethrough | ~~strike~~ | strike |
| Spoiler | ||spoiler|| | [click to reveal] |
| Code | `code` | code |
Markdown formatting is ideal for message content, but it has a hard limitation: it only works inside the message input field. Discord completely ignores Markdown syntax in usernames, display names, server names, channel names, and custom statuses. If you type **CoolName** as your display name, Discord will show the literal asterisks rather than rendering bold text.
This is exactly where Unicode fonts fill the gap. Unicode characters are not formatting instructions — they are standalone glyphs with their own code points. When you paste a Bold Script or Italic Serif name into your display name field, Discord stores and renders the actual characters as-is. No Markdown parsing is needed because the visual style is baked into the characters themselves. That makes Unicode fonts the only reliable way to style text in any Discord field outside of regular messages.
For messages, you can even combine both approaches. Paste a Unicode-styled word inside a Markdown-formatted sentence to create layered emphasis that is impossible with either technique alone. For example, wrapping a Bold Fraktur word in Discord's native underline syntax gives you underlined blackletter text — a combination no single formatting system can produce on its own.
Where Discord Fonts Work
Discord display names accept most Unicode characters. Set a styled name in Edit Profile and it appears everywhere you chat. Per-server nicknames also support Unicode, so you can have a different styled name in each community.
Unicode fonts render perfectly in regular messages, replies, and threads. They display the same on desktop, web, iOS, and Android. Note that pasting styled text inside a code block (```) will strip the Unicode rendering and show raw characters instead.
Server owners can use Unicode characters in the server name and channel names to create a distinctive visual identity. Keep in mind that highly decorative fonts may reduce readability at small sizes in the channel sidebar.
The custom status field and the About Me section on your profile both accept Unicode fonts. These are prime spots for styled text because they sit front and center when someone clicks your profile card.
How to Use Discord Fonts
Type your Discord display name, server name, or message into the input field above. The generator previews every style in real time as you type.
Scroll through the style cards below the input. Each card shows the font name, a brief description, and a live preview of your text in that style.
Click the copy button on the style card you like. A green checkmark confirms the styled text is now on your clipboard.
Open Discord and navigate to the field you want to style — Edit Profile for display names, Server Settings for server names, or a message input for chat text.
Paste the copied text with Ctrl+V (or Cmd+V on Mac). Discord will display the Unicode characters exactly as they appear in the preview. Send the message or save your profile to apply.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. Discord does not offer a built-in font picker or custom typography settings. However, Discord does support Markdown formatting in messages: **bold**, *italic*, __underline__, ~~strikethrough~~, ||spoiler||, and `code`. These Markdown styles only work inside message content. For usernames, server names, and channel names where Markdown is ignored, Unicode fonts are the only way to change how your text looks.
Use Markdown when you want to emphasize text inside a message, because it renders cleanly and does not affect searchability. Use Unicode fonts when you need styled text in places Markdown cannot reach: display names, server names, channel names, and custom statuses. You can also combine both — paste a Unicode-styled word into a Markdown-formatted sentence for layered emphasis.
Your global Discord username (the handle after the @) is restricted to alphanumeric characters and limited symbols, so Unicode fonts will not work there. However, your display name and per-server nicknames accept most Unicode characters. Generate a styled name with this tool, paste it into Edit Profile > Display Name, and it will appear across all servers that have not set a custom nickname for you.
Yes. Discord's mobile apps on iOS and Android render Unicode characters the same way the desktop client does. The only difference is that a small number of obscure Unicode blocks may display slightly differently depending on the device's system font. The styles in this generator use widely supported Unicode ranges and display correctly on virtually all modern phones.
Some bots that parse usernames or message content with regex may not recognize Unicode-styled text as regular letters. For example, a moderation bot looking for a banned word spelled in normal ASCII will miss the same word written in Bold Script. If a server relies heavily on bot commands that mention your name, test with a Unicode nickname first before committing to it permanently.
